Owen looked down at the hand wrapped around his upper arm as he strode out of the dining room where the fiasco he’d just experienced had played out. As soon as the door shut, and he and Portia Birkshire were relatively alone he stopped. “What are you doing?”
“I’m spending time with my betrothed.”
He glared down at her. “Let go of my arm and go away.”
She laughed. “Oh, Owen don’t be like that. We need to show a united front to the people of the court and the press that will be waiting outside.”
Owen reached down and peeled her hand off his arm. “You will unhand my royal personage and will refrain from touching me unless I ask you to. If you refuse I will have you removed from the Palace.”
“You can’t. I was invited here by special invitation of the King.”
“Then you will spend your special invitation confined to your chambers, Countess, if you take liberties with my personage again.”
“What is your problem? You knew this was coming? The treaty has been clear for years. I am to marry the Crown Prince.”
Owen shook his head. “No, I read the treaty. The way it was worded you were to marry Crown Prince Leonardo, not the crown prince. We are not betrothed, and you will never be my wife.”
Her eyes narrowed. “I would think very carefully before you commit to that. Because you don’t have the final say on whom becomes your wife.”
Owen smiled. “Oh, but I do. I can use the same escape clause my brother did to get away from you and your father’s plans.”
“We both know that unlike your brother you won’t abdicate the throne. You care too much for the people of Phildonia to do that.”
“I will do what is best for Phildonia and that is to not make you it’s Queen. Everything you said today at breakfast proved that to me.”
“So the Queen was correct, the little American girl has you smitten. She will never be your Queen, that I can promise you. If you insist on choosing her then the King, Queen and Council will assure that you are betrothed to the best candidate and that is me. I was raised to be the Queen of Phildonia and that is who I will be.”
“No, you won’t. If they force me then I will abdicate and then Jaqueline will be Queen.”
“Not in time, Owen. When the public realizes their King is sick with an illness that will steal his mind they will demand he step down. The council will demand it, and your little sister isn’t old enough to assume the crown. Father will be made regent. With your father weak, who will keep her safe from the many enemies your father has made through the years? I wonder how long until she is found poisoned in her own bed.”
Owen grabbed the woman by the shoulders. “That is treason, Lady Birkshire and I’ll have you in chains for it.”
“That’s not treason, My Prince. I made no threat, I asked a simple clarifying question.
